A Holistic Approach to Substance Abuse Treatment

A holistic approach to treatment is based on the concept that there are many contributing factors responsible for a person’s well-being, and each of these factors should be taken into consideration when assessing someone’s health. Treating a client with a holistic-based approach means taking the entire individual into account – physical, social, mental and spiritual being.

A person can be stable emotionally and physically, but may need help mentally and spiritually. These areas are interdependent and make up the human being. Disregarding one in favor of another is not treating the entire person. When a person is not treated holistically, relapses and other issues are more likely to arise. Working on one’s life purpose is a major part of addiction therapy. A client may recognize their addiction problem and habit as a negative way of life, but without knowing what their path should be, it is difficult to get started on it.

At Spark of Hope, our comprehensive treatment program is designed to provide clients with not only traditional modalities of treatment such as individual, group, and family therapy, but also to provide an opportunity for them to express their thoughts and feelings through holistic modalities. These modalities include dance/movement therapy, Tai-Chi, art therapy, leisure and recreational skills, spiritual growth and development, cultural awareness and appreciation, vocational services, psychiatric care and physical health. The purpose of a holistic program is to ensure that we focus on ways to help our clients develop a stronger sense of self-identity, self-esteem and self-confidence – enabling them to sustain their recovery and lead successful lives.

In recovery we say, “Move a muscle, change a thought.” Physical activity can be a powerful tool in relapse prevention. Our outpatient drug treatment center will offer physical activities as a supplement to counseling and therapy. This might include outdoor activities, fitness and yoga, meditation, and other recreational therapy.
